Caseine | |
In 1949, Fortin discovers a new product, casein, a type of gouache with a milk base, (casei). Fortin is very enthusiastic about this new medium. He works a lot during these years in his studio in Sainte-Rose. Inspired by his watercolours, he experiments with this new product on panels. The thing which dazzles the artist is the mat effect he obtains with casein which has no transparency at all unlike watercolour. He makes up his whites himself. He buys boxes of powdered milk and mixes up the powder in water. This creates a dense and thick mixture which Fortin finds perfect for rendering clouds. |
